Healthy Lifestyles in Youth
Indian Health Service
This project promotes healthy lifestyles amongst American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth at selected Native Boys and Girls Club sites across the nation. The long-term goal is to prevent or delay the onset of obesity and related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. Participating sites implement the "Together Raising Awareness for Indian Life" (also known as T.R.A.I.L. or "On the T.R.A.I.L. to Diabetes Prevention") curriculum. T.R.A.I.L. uses an innovative combination of physical, educational, and nutritional activities. The sites also draw from tribal traditions and history to learn about nutrition, food choices, media influences, and the impact of diabetes. T.R.A.I.L. is currently offered at 68 Native Boys and Girls Clubs sites in 11 states. Since 2003, the program has served more than 22,000 AI/AN youth.
